‘Chilling Out’
Don’t you wish sometimes that you had the time and space to just ‘chill out’ during the day? Well that is what these beautiful children get to do. During Lunch 1 and Lunch 2 our students have the opportunity to attend our Chillout space. This is an area designed to just sit and play quiet games and puzzles, to draw, talk, relax on bean bags or build towers with blocks. Whatever the children choose to do, it is done quietly and in a very relaxing environment. It is a beautiful spot to sit and listen to the students talk about their day or watch them engaging in imaginative play.
Tell Them From Me - Partners in Learning Survey
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at St Joseph’s Primary School.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You can leave the survey and return at another time if that is more suitable.
Last week we emailed and sent via sms to you the below link to be able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device: http://tellthemfromme.com/t4fs3
Thank you for taking time to complete this survey.
Celebrating Our Faith
This week we took time to pray to Saint Mary MacKillop. We celebrated the feast day of Mary MacKillop on Monday 8th August. Some key messages that we hold onto at St Joseph's are:
"Find happiness in making others happy".
"Never see a need without doing something about it".
"God gives me strength for what is necessary".
- Mary MacKillop
We are grateful to Saint Mary Mackillop, whose life inspires us to go out to make a difference.
The Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary
Monday 15th August is the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary. This day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was "assumed" into heaven to be reunited with her soul.
Blessed is She, having completed the course of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. Her assumption reminds us that heavenly glory is our Christian destiny. As we keep the end of life’s pilgrim journey before us, we join with Mary in praising the greatness of God.
We take time to pray to Mary and thank her for watching over us in all that we do.

Book Week
Each year since 1945 the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. At St Joseph’s, students will read a variety of books including the CBCA nominated books over the week.
On Friday 26th August from 1:15pm, parents and carers are invited to come in and share a story with their child. Parents and carers are encouraged to bring a favourite story from when they were a child. A variety of books will also be available within classrooms on this day to share.
Parents and carers are welcome to stay during Lunch 2, to read, play or bring a snack to enjoy with their child (we are a nut and allergy aware school). All are welcome to stay and attend our Friday prayer assembly at 2:20pm, hosted by our SRC students.
Innovation Grant Update - Future Anything Professional Learning
CREATE - Developing future Capabilities by fostering Relationships, developing Enterprising skills, activating student Agency through a Targeted and Empowering curriculum.
As part of our Innovation Grant, this week our staff participated in a professional learning experience facilitated by Nicole Dyson from Future Anything. Effective professional learning focuses on developing the core attributes of an effective teacher. It enhances teachers' understanding of the content they teach and equips them with a range of strategies that enable their students to learn that content.
Nicole is a globally recognised expert and practitioner in project-based learning and student entrepreneurship and is the founder of Future Anything, which delivers award winning, curriculum aligned entrepreneurship programs for school students. She has repeatedly led the design and implementation of whole school changes to support future ready learning.
Nicole passionately believes that youth-led ideas have the power to bend the future, and works tirelessly to provide young people (and their educators) with the support, skills and space they need to take their ideas out of the classroom and into the real world.
Our Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) team spent a further day with Nicole participating in a pilot program called Activate. Nicole worked with our teachers to create units of work that will use entrepreneurship as a vehicle to build the capacity of our students across six key future capabilities.
PBS (Positive Behaviour Support)

Year 1 Space Learning Day
Our Year 1 students have been immersed in space themed texts as well as Virtual Reality experiences as part of their learning in English. To celebrate this learning, Year 1 students designed and created rockets at school and participated in space themed activities. Students then independently wrote a creative writing story that we shared with our families in an open classroom experience last Wednesday. It was a fun filled time for everyone involved!
Check out our school Facebook page for more photos of our Year 1 Space Learning Day.
Year 4 UPDATE
We have some wonderful students in Year 4 who would like to share a snapshot of their learning with our school community.
Marielle
How We Learn
In English we have been learning about writing a persuasive text. We have learnt how to write the introduction, body paragraphs 1, 2, 3 and the conclusion. In English we are also learning about Geography. We have also been talking about cleaning up the environment and keeping other places clean. For example: the beach, our playground, the city and much more.
Advik
Growth Mindset
In Year 4, we can earn mindfulness tokens. To get mindfulness tokens, we need to listen to the teacher or show positive behaviour in the classroom or in the school playground. What you do with them: you collect ten tokens to get a prize! This is showing the class how positive or good you are around the class, the school playground and places were we go.
Noah
Sport
Each week, we have been practising circuits that our classmates have created. They go for 2 to 3 minutes and have five skills.
Hannah
Religion
For Religion we have been learning about God's creation and how He created humans and diffrent types of animal and plant species. I enjoy learning about all His wonderful creations.
Ayla
Literacy Groups
In literacy groups we have been using OzBox. In OzBox we read a card and write down questions and answers. Then we use typing.com and we learn how to type faster and where to use punctuation. We also have Atlas work where we learn cool facts about the earth floods, rivers and lots of animals. Another activity we have is Seesaw. Seesaw is an app where you can answer things and do activities e.g Naidoc week activities like puzzles, drawing and listening tasks. Last but not least, we have a partner reading activity. We read a book of choice, then we choose an activity to complete.
Ameiley
Mathematics Block
ln Year 4 we have been doing a lot of Maths. First we work through a question study. Then we play Splat. This is where there is a number and two red splats on some dots and a yellow splat on some other dots. We need to find the total amount. We also complete a rich task where there are lots of possible answer combinations. We then discuss them all together.
Ruby
English
In Year 4 we have been doing sentence a day. It is when we write a story that is on the board and it has errors and we have to fix them. We see if our answers are right by checking as a class. We also need to correct 3 sentences where there is one word wrong in each sentence (such as a spelling mistake or incorrect homophone).
Lily
Dance
We are learning our Glasshouse dance. It is from Moana. I really enjoy the dance. I’m so excited to perform at the Glasshouse.
Makayla
National Tree Day
National Tree Day was where we got to plant trees in our schools grounds. National Tree Day is the best because planting trees is the best thing to do and in my opinion, planting trees is like planting God's creation. Trees can get rid of carbon dioxide. When carbon dioxide comes to the trees, they turn it into oxygen. Humans need oxygen to survive!
Thank you for reading about our learning.
Year 4 Students
Reminder for students participating in the
2022 Premier's Reading Challenge that
online entries close on Friday 19th August 2022.
Diocesan Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all of our student athletes who travelled to Coffs Harbour on Wednesday to compete in the Diocesan Athletics Carnival. Our Hastings Zone managers reported back that our students were incredibly resilient and showed great sportsmanship.
Three cheers to the following students who have advanced to the Polding Athletics Carnival on Friday 9th September in Newcastle.

Update For Works Along Aston Street
You may have noticed the @EireConstructions crew working along Aston Street – they are currently replacing the sewer main that runs parallel to the Dixie Park Soccer Fields.
There may be minor delays and impacts for the use of Aston St, particularly if you use the Warlters Street cul de sac for parking during school drop off/pick up. Please take care when in the area, and follow the traffic signs at all times.
Works are expected to wrap up along Aston Street in the coming month with some minor off street works remaining in the Dixie Park carpark area.
