‘Compass’ - School Communication Platform APP
At the beginning of Term 3 St Joseph’s Primary will be introducing a new communication and school administration platform called - COMPASS School Manager. The Compass platform will become our school community communication tool from Week 1 Term 3. This will replace a number of our current systems and processes. Compass is already being used by a number of Dioceses and the Lismore Diocese has been moving all schools to Compass over the past three years. Staff have been attending training sessions in all aspects of Compass in preparation for the changeover.
About the Compass Platform
The Compass platform is a web-based system that is accessible on any modern web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) or by using the Compass School Manager iOS or Android App. The Compass platform includes many different features, you will have the ability to:
- Receive notifications about school events, news and information.
- Enter an explanation for absences.
- Communicate with your child’s teachers.
- Update your family contact details (mobile phone and email).
- Download and view your child’s academic reports.
- Book parent-teacher conferences (parent/teacher interviews).
- Pay and provide digital consent for events (No more permission slips).
Over the coming weeks as we move closer to the transition to Compass we will communicate the parent onboarding process, how you access the platform and where you can go for help.
Diocesan Cross Country
Congratulations to our talented students who recently participated in the Diocesan Cross Country Trials held in Grafton! It was a remarkable display of determination and athleticism as our athletes showcased their skills and competed against schools from across the Diocese. We commend each and every one of our students for their outstanding efforts and for representing our school with pride and sportsmanship. Special recognition goes out to Keilah Long and Evie Johnson who will travel to Polding in Sydney on 13th June.
Netball
We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our remarkable Year 5 and Year 6 students who recently participated in the Port Macquarie Primary Schools Netball Cup. Our athletes demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and dedication throughout the competition, representing our school with pride. Their teamwork was truly commendable as they faced tough opponents from various schools. Well done to all participants for their remarkable achievements.
This term, Year 4 have been busy learning about ceramics in Visual Arts. Students recently used their knowledge about the design process of clay to create a clay pinch planter pot.

National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
National Sorry Day
Friday 26th May is a significant day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly for our Stolen Generations survivors. Commemorating ‘Sorry Day’ was one of the recommendations of the Bringing Them Home report, which was tabled in Parliament on 26th May 1997. This report was the result of a National Inquiry into the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their families, communities and cultural identity. The first ‘Sorry Day’ was held in Sydney in 1998 and is now held nationally with memorials and commemorative events that honour the Stolen Generations.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is from 27th May to 3rd June. It is an ideal time for everyone to join the reconciliation conversation and reflect on shared histories, contributions and achievements. It is held annually and is a time to celebrate and build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. Preceded by National Sorry Day, National Reconciliation Week is framed by two key events in Australia’s history, which provide strong symbols for reconciliation:
• 27th May 1967 – After 10 years of campaigning, a referendum on Indigenous recognition in the Australian constitution was held. The lead-up to the poll focused public attention on the fact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were treated as second-class citizens. Nearly 91 per cent of the electorate voted to amend the constitution.
• 3rd June 1992 – the historic Mabo decision. The Mabo decision was named after Eddie Mabo, the man who challenged the Australian legal system and fought for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their land.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is 'Be a Voice for Generations'. The theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.

Newsletter and Website Accessibility
A Website Accessibility Bar is now available on our Joey’s Jottings newsletter and website. The Website Accessibility Bar allows users to do 2 things:
- Instantly translate pages from English into more than 100 other languages; and
- Increase font size on the page for the vision impaired.
We are very excited to have Joey’s Jottings and our website more accessible to non-English speaking and vision impaired users. Further accessibility options will be added throughout the year.
The Term 2 menu and price list is now available on our website and the Flexischools App. Unfortunately there is an unavoidable price increase on a few items due to supplier increases.
