Hi everyone,
Our students have been very busy this week with a number of great things happening, no doubt looking forward to a weekend to rest.
Year 6 Camp
I had the pleasure of spending some time on camp with our Year 6 students and staff at the Coffs Coast Adventure Camp in Coffs Harbour. While the rain dampened clothes and activities, it certainly didn’t dampen spirits! Our students made the most of the great facilities at the camp and we are very grateful to have given Year 6 the experience that COVID-19 nearly took away. I am sure that the students will have some great stories to tell. A very big thanks goes to Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Hough, Mr Lynch, Mrs Howard, Mr Porter, Mrs Ucdereli, Ms Gilchrist and Mr Smith for the time spent organising the camp and taking time from their families to provide the experience for students. What is a camp without a hospital visit….We are also grateful to the wonderful staff at Coffs Base Hospital for the care of a couple of students whose injuries required some checking and the staff who did the long wait! Everyone is now home safe and sound.
End of Year Performance
You will be aware that in Term 3 we were unable to hold our Glasshouse Performance, which we look forward to. As a school we had committed to still allowing students the opportunity to learn from the Creative Arts Curriculum and have a performance to work towards. A note explaining what this will look like will go home shortly. Other notes specific to your child’s year group may come home during the next few weeks if there are items needed from home to support the performance. Please speak with your child’s class teacher in the first instance around this, as they will be able to give you more detailed information about this.
Swimming Carnival change
Last week in the newsletter was the announcement that we are unable to hold our swimming carnival due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will send a note home soon to explain this decision and provide dates for your calendar in preparation for the start of our swimming events in 2021.
Transition to school - Kindergarten 2021
Please remember to book your child in for our transition sessions as soon as possible if they are starting school in 2021. We are so excited that we can welcome children to our school for a brief time to feel what it will be like for them.
CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2021 SCHOOL YEAR
This term, teacher teams in each year will begin to ‘split’ their classes to create two new class groups for 2021. This is an important and complex process as teachers aim to create two ‘even’ groups. Children will be asked to complete a sociogram to identify a few friends they believe they work well with, and teachers ensure that every child is placed with at least one of these friends. Considerations include, but are not limited to, assessment data, peer dynamics, learning and behavioural needs and the ratio of boys and girls.
If you believe that teachers need to consider a specific factor for your child to be a successful learner, please submit a written response to the Principal no later than Monday 2nd November. You can email to: sjpport@lism.catholic.edu.au
Please understand that requests from previous years will not be referred to and only written responses received by 2nd November will be considered.

CRAZY SOCK DAY
Our Minnie Vinnies Team are driving a fundraising effort for Socktober (Crazy Sock Day) on Thursday 5th November. Students are invited to come to school wearing any crazy sock of choice with their sports uniform and bring a gold coin donation. Funds raised from Socktober this year will go to the Arrupe Centre in Cambodia.
The Arrupe Centre is a school for children with disabilities. Some of these disabilities are the result of active landmines, causing devastation to poor families who have nowhere to send their children to school.

book week continues
Infants Book Week Gallery Walk
As mentioned last week our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students completed a number of learning experiences for Book Week and focused on the book ‘Three’. One of the experiences was to write about what they liked best about the book and draw a picture. These were then judged by some of our SRC students.
Congratulations to our winners: Yzekiel Nieva - KM, Hannah Cooper - KS, Ivy-Lea Harris - 1B; Cailin Daley - 1R, Kyra Edkins - 2T, Eden Pope - 2S
Year 6 Story Book
6H wrote a collaborative story about Max’s life journey through the eyes of his guardian angel. Here are some pages from their book.
Healthy Harold Visits - Life Education Van
To enrich our implementation of the PDHPE curriculum, the Life Education Van will be visiting St Joseph’s Primary from Wednesday 4th November through to Tuesday 10th November. All students will visit the Heathly Harold van with their class group to attend a Personal Development and Health lesson.

Birthday Buckets
Birthday Buckets have been very popular this week with multiple orders and lots of excited children coming to collect them to share with their classmates for their special day.
How much do they cost?
Just $10.00 per bucket.
The bucket will be decorated for your child’s birthday and collected during the day as directed by the teacher to share with their class. The buckets are reusable and will need to be returned to the canteen.
How do you order them?
They can be ordered via Flexischools on the day you would like your child to share them or can be ordered in advance. Alternatively, if you don’t use Flexischools, you can call the school office to order directly from the Canteen.
Term 4 Menu
There are a couple of small price increases on the new Term 4 Menu. These are necessary as some suppliers have increased their prices but I have kept them as low as possible. New items have also been added to the menu. These include a large meat pie and a junior sausage roll which have been requested by many of the children this year. There are also new flavours of Frozen Yoghurts to try out and they are Mango/Watermelon and Blueberry/Cookie Dough. These items can all be ordered through Flexischools.
LUNCH ORDERS
The canteen is operating as usual and lunch orders can be placed via Flexischools or by dropping them in the basket on the counter each morning.
Don't forget you can order online by 8:30am- it's so easy!!
- Download the Flexischools app from the App Store or from Google Play.
Note: for iPhone and iPad please select ‘Allow’ notification - Click “Register Now” to create account
- Top-up your balance
- Start ordering immediately
- Alternatively Go to www.flexischools.com.au
VOLUNTEER NOTICE
We are still unable to have volunteers in the canteen at this stage until further notice.

Margaret was a much loved friend, who had granddaughters that went through the Catholic Schools here in Port Macquarie.
She started sewing for many parents of School children, when their uniforms needed their hems adjusted, or any odd mending that was required, and continued to help us long after her grandchildren had finished School.
She will be sadly missed, and we would like to pass on our prayers and condolences to her family.
Warm Regards,
Lyn Murphy, Lorraine Taylor, Anne Schofield and Dorota Dzikowska

In Year 1 we've been learning about the past and the present in History. This week we thought about the ways that we spend our free time, and how this might be different to the way our parents and grandparents spent their free time when they were growing up. Archie shared that one of his favourite activities in his free time is to play shop-keepers, and we talked about how this is something parents and grandparents may also have done in their free time when they were growing up. Kooper drew a picture of Sonic the Hedgehog at the movies and talked about how parents and grandparents wouldn't have watched Sonic the Hedgehog but would have been able to go to the movies when they were growing up.
Term 4 Student Activity Statements
Student Activity Statements were sent home this week. We would appreciate it if parents/carers could finalise these amounts by the end of Week 5. If you would like to discuss your account please contact myself or Mrs Tess Koning on 6583 3848.

Tune in to Mental Health Month
The theme for Mental Health Month this year is 'Tune In'. So what does this mean and how can we do it?
Click on the below image if you wish to read more on Mental Health Month.
PBS (Positive Behaviour Support)
What a positive start to the Term with students settling back into their learning with ease, being ready to learn and making positive choices. This week, we are focusing on minimising disruptions to support the learning of others. This often means raising our hand to speak, avoiding distraction with others and maintaining focus on our learning.
REWARD PLAY
Students were rewarded on Monday with additional play. Congratulations students for your wonderful behaviour and choices that makes St Joseph’s school such a beautiful place to be.
