Mother’s Day
The main message I would like to give this week is the excitement we shared as a school community in being able to host a Mother’s Day celebration today. In reflection, it has been such a long time since we last did this, that some of our students have never actually experienced an event like this before in our school! Our beautiful Year 1 students, who with their incredible teachers gave us lots to celebrate, were overwhelmed by the number of mums, grandmothers and carers who came to be with us and to see them lead so well. It warmed my heart to see you all and I want to thank you for coming to be with us. This is only the first of many more wonderful events to come, so please keep connected to our communications, so you can come back again for our next endeavour. I wish you all a wonderful day on Sunday, but also to ensure you know just how much you mean to your children and to our community. Happy Mother’s Day.
Signing in to the school
As of Monday 10th May, all parents and visitors entering the school grounds from any entrance in addition to the office will need to sign in using our QR code. This includes dropping off in the morning (if you enter the school grounds beyond the office or gate) but doesn’t include parent pick up in the afternoon, for parents who are using our walk through. If you are coming during the hours of 8:55am to 3:10pm, all gates will be locked and entry is through the office as usual. This is not only a COVID-19 check-in, but a child protection check-in that we are required to have. This is to ensure the safety of every child in our community. We will have QR codes on the pathway entrance walls in the mornings to make this as easy as possible and not to overwhelm the office foyer during the busy first part of the day. Thank you for your support with this important procedure.
Catholic Schools Week - 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia
Our fun photo gallery and video for our students that was posted last week in the newsletter was a real look at life in times past at school. This week I am resharing just the video, so that you can see the lengths that our super staff go to, in efforts to inspire and entertain our students. See if you can pick out our staff among the very Holy sisters and brothers of St Joseph!
Local World Record Attempt!
A reminder that we would love to support The Rotary of Port Macquarie West, to attempt to break the existing world record for the “Longest Washing Line of Socks”! If you would like to drop in any “lonely socks”, well-worn pairs of socks, or socks as presents from family or friends that have never been worn. They don’t need to be new, but please clean. We will collect them and drop them off as we have enough to do so, for the month of May. The event will take place in the first weekend of June.

Proclaim Lismore
Staff of Catholic schools across the Diocese of Lismore spent a day engaged in discussions and presentations on the future of Catholic education on Wednesday. The day outlined the challenges of today’s age whilst providing us with faith in the future. We celebrate our Catholic identity within our evolving society and are inspired to continue to be a beacon of hope and joy for our students and families.
Mother’s Day
Thank you to Year 1 who led the school in a celebration of all mothers and mother figures in our lives. We acknowledge the contributions and vital role they play for our school and more specifically, the children. As teachers, we value the partnership with all mothers and carers of our students and on behalf of St Joseph’s, we wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.

CONSUMERS TO CREATORS
This week Mrs Sarah Blundell and Mrs Jeannine Ucdereli presented at the Science Teachers Association NSW K - 10 Conference in Sydney. The conference focused on the global challenges of the 21st century and how they require citizens who are scientifically literate problem-solvers. These are critical and creative thinkers who can seek, interpret and evaluate information and apply solutions that address ethical, personal, social and intercultural dimensions. That is, citizens who possess each of the general capabilities. Sarah and Jeannine focused their presentation on embedding the general capabilities authentically through quality literature, virtual and augmented reality.

Lunchtime Sporting Skills
Starting this week our Year 5 and 6 students are invited to attend fortnightly training sessions in Rugby League, Netball, Basketball, and Soccer. These training sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Lunch 1. The aim of these sessions is to build a culture of sportsmanship and quality skills with an eye towards our future representative competitions.
Wow what a week of Sport and achievements it has been! Congratulations to all!

Positive Behaviour Reward Play
Last year, we introduced ‘Reward Play’. This is our way of acknowledging positive behaviours of children during their lunch times.

Alison Lester’s classic book comes to life on stage in a wonderful world of text, song, light, shadow and movement. From the team behind The Gruffalo and The 13-, 26-, 52-, 78- and 91-Storey Treehouses, this new Australian adaptation from multi-award winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer is a celebration of the power of the imagination and the differences that make every child special.
