Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown Drills
From time to time the school participates in an emergency drill so that we all know how to respond in an emergency. There are two types of drills: A Lockdown or an Emergency Evacuation. Each staff member has specific roles for ensuring the safety and care of our students in these situations.
A Lockdown occurs when there is an external threat and involves students and staff taking shelter in buildings and ‘locking down’. If a Lockdown occurs no person will be permitted to enter or leave the buildings/school for its duration.
An Emergency Evacuation occurs when the school community needs to be evacuated to a particular evacuation point because of an event such as a fire.
Earlier this week we sounded the emergency alarm sirens across the school while announcing and discussing in classes what they were for so that students are familiar with the different siren sounds. Next week we will be holding a practise emergency drill. Students will be debriefed after the drill while staff evaluate its effectiveness.
