PARENT WEBINARS
Our Parent Assembly, sponsored by the Catholic Schools Office, is a wonderful group of parents across the Diocese who provide opportunities for parents to engage in ways to support their children as they move through school.
There are two webinars coming up through Parent Assembly that you may find useful in areas of supporting your children. The beauty of webinars is that you don’t need to leave home to sit in a room listening to a presenter - you can join in via the comfort of home!
These are always quality engaging presenters, speaking on matters that are relevant to families. I encourage you to look at the two that are coming up to see if they may be suitable to you.
1. Maggie Dent - From the Sandpit to Adulthood: Helping Today’s Children to Thrive
Monday 22nd June 7:00-8:15pm
2. Michelle Mitchell - Turn everyday challenges into moments that build resilience
Thursday 6th August 7:00-8:00pm
Please see the flyers for both webinars in the Parent Assembly article of this newsletter.
A previous webinar which is very relevant to parents whose children enjoy gaming online was “Game Aware” with Andrew Kinch. If you missed this one, and have concerns about how gaming is affecting your child, I recommend you look up what Andrew says about it via his website. https://www.gameaware.com.au/about-us/
WINTER UNIFORMS
- Thank you for ensuring your children are in their correct winter uniforms. If there are any items that you require, they can be sourced through St Agnes’ Uniform Store in Boronia Street or check our second hand items at school. If unsure, please check our parent handbook for items required.
https://sjpport.schoolzineplus.com/st-joseph-s-primary-information-handbook - We have been reminding families via the newsletter and speaking with students at school about ensuring they are back in the correct uniforms during the transition back to school. We will be starting Term 3 with the expectation that students are wearing correct items. Notes will come home in Term 3 with requests should there still be uniforms that are not correct.
- If you have any uniforms that you no longer need you may like to consider donating these to the second hand uniform room at school. This is especially useful for students who are completing school this year and will not be requiring them next year.
SOCIAL DISTANCING
- As restrictions change in the wider community, our practices remain the same, with the prediction that they will remain until the end of Term 2. We will update families on activities that can begin to resume in Term 3 as we have clear guidelines.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP
- Our practices remain as they have been for the past number of weeks. Thank you for your assistance in the drop off and pick up procedures.
Handy tip: staggering of pick up is available via our Warlters Street process - duty for pick up is from 3:10-3:30pm, so a wise choice to avoid lengthy lining up would be to come during the later part of this timeframe.
ILLNESS
- Children must remain at home if they have any cold or flu symptoms. If they present unwell at school they will be sent home. This also applies to staff members.
- If any family member is being tested for COVID-19, the school needs to be informed and all students from the family are not to attend school until the results are returned as negative.
ATHLETICS SELECTIONS
Unfortunately neither Zone or Diocesan Athletics will be held this year, however we will still hold small group finals to determine place getters at St Joseph’s for Year 2 - 6 on Thursday next week. Due to the guidelines around social distancing and current restrictions in place we are unable to hold our usual community 'carnival' and we will not be able to have visitors join us on the selection day. The 800m and 1500m have been postponed from Friday next week and will now be held in Term 3, due to a waterlogged Dixie Park. Please see further details in the Sport Spotlight section of this newsletter.

FAITH CHOIR
Our Faith Choir have performed a song called ‘Send Us Out’ by Gen Bryant to help celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. We like this song because it reminds us that we are called to go out into the world as people backed by our God.

A LOOK INTO SOME OF OUR LEARNING EXPERIENCES THIS WEEK - YEAR 4 AND 5
Year 5 - Exploring Australian History
Year 5 is currently exploring Australian History. They are learning about the many significant events and developments that shaped the Australian colonies during the 1800's.
Students were asked to reproduce a piece of artwork using Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly work as inspiration.
Year 4 - Characterisation
Year 4 students have been exploring how to make their stories more interesting for their audience. This week they have been specifically looking at how to build vocabulary to adequately describe a character or an image.
Here are a few snippets of when they used an image from Anthony Brown’s ‘Into the Woods’.
Riley - As I stumbled further into the cold, wet, dark forest I encountered a girl. She had golden, stiff, plaited hair, dark, gloomy eyes and arched eyebrows. “What’s in your very nice basket?” “It’s a cake for my sweet, old, poor grandma.” “I would love a cake like that.” “Sorry but you cannot have it.” “But I want it!” “Sorry NO!” “But I..” “No!”
Hayley - As I stumbled through the eerily, silent forest a wicked girl with long, stiff, golden plaits stopped in her tracks and stared deeply into my basket. The stubborn, bratty girl wouldn’t move. Hungry for a tasty snack from my wicker basket I was confused and surprised at how she had got here. How long has she been here for? She was still waiting in her aggressive stance for a response, with her eyebrows arched still.
Abbey - As I walked on, a frustrated, angry stare stood in my way. You could see her dark, gloomy eyebrows like they were talking for her. I took a big terrified gulp and then I started talking. I said “excuse me, you’re in my way, I’m trying to deliver a cake to my dear nanna.” She replied back in a voice like a demon saying “Well, if you're going to get past me I’ll need a lovely cake like that too.” As she was talking I was thinking I better make a run for it.
Lucinda - As I scampered on, I spotted a short little girl bending down, glaring straight at my Grandma's humongous cake. “Nice cake you’ve got there!” she frowned as she fell into an aggressive stance that was blocking my path. “Thanks, it’s for my Grandma '' I replied, feeling a little stunned. “I want a cake like that!” She yelled back in frustration.” I am terribly sorry I explained politely, “but it’s for my Grandma” I quietly yelled trying to calm down. I took one step around the greedy girl and continued trudging along the rickety path, but I could still hear her blurting out words in catastrophic frustration.
Imogen - As I ran cautiously down the twisted path, I saw a golden haired girl dressed in a pink apron (dangling from her knees). “What a lovely cake you have there.” The girl confronted me with a stare. I stopped with shock and fear looking at her beady black eyes. The stubborn look she had reminded me of this girl from back home. As she bent down to get a closer look at the basket her long, stiff plaits caught my undesirable attention. I quickly walked away still hearing her. I did not want to stay there all day.
Mia - As I walked through the dark, gloomy forest a girl with golden hair and a nasty, mean stare stood in front of me. When she finally stopped staring at me she took a good look at my basket and said “Whatcha got there?” “A nice fruity cake?” I looked at her thinking what should I do? Does she want some? I tried to walk away, but her furious face stood there. “Give me some.” she stomped with anger so I stomped away. Despite her yelling “I want some! I need some.” She just kept demanding but still I didn’t give her any. She threw her thick, grey ribbon on the floor.
Charlie - As I stumbled through the wicked, gloomy forest I spied on a golden headed, eerily dressed girl. The girl immediately went into a sassy position then glared into my dear old Granny’s basket. Despite her slanted, furrowed, beady black eyebrows, she spoke sweetly. Although I needed to keep going, I heard her saying “I need cake.”
Cordelia - As I walked further into the forest I stumbled across a girl with long, stiff, golden plaits. As she got closer she stood in my way and with her black, beady eyes looking straight at my basket ad said “What’s in that basket?” I replied with “a fruit cake for my poorly Grandma.” The bratty looking girl said “I would like cake like that. I am poorly.” As I walked further away from the annoying, bratty girl she kept saying the same thing.
Amelie - As I ran into the forest a mean, jealous, greedy girl with long, golden hair looked into my basket. Why was she looking into my basket? However much I wanted to kick her out of my way that was the mean thing to do. She said “What a lovely cake you have there. Can I have some? That will be lovely of you if you do. Do you like me?”

The Zones of Regulation (2011) was developed by Occupational Therapist (Leah Kuypers) as a way to help children learn to regulate their emotions by:
- Helping to recognise their feelings
- Helping to communicate their feelings
- Finding tools and strategies to help cope with their feelings
The Zones place feelings and states of alertness into 4 colour zones:
BLUE: This can be described as having a low state of alertness. We don’t have much energy and it is really hard to do things.
Some blue feelings are sick, tired, sad, hurt, bored and shy.
GREEN: We are in a regulated state of alertness.
Some green feelings are calm, happy, proud, ready to learn, relaxed, focused and okay.
YELLOW: We are in a heightened state of alertness but we are able to control it.
Some yellow feelings are worried, silly, excited, annoyed, nervous, frustrated.
RED: This is when we feel we are about to lose our cool or explode.
We are in an extremely heightened state of alertness and have very intense feelings.
Some feelings are terrified, mad, angry, elated or mean.
We all experience each of the Zones at one time or another and by helping students learn how to regulate their emotions, they will be able to achieve the preferred state of alertness for the situation they are in.
Simple strategies that can be used include deep breathing, counting to 10 and a progressive muscle relaxation.

Zoom with Bondi Rescue Lifeguard
On Tuesday Year 6 were super lucky to have a Zoom meeting with Bruce 'Hoppo' Hopkins the Head Lifeguard/Boss of Bondi Rescue. He was so kind to use his time to answer some questions Airlia Matthews had for a project. He gave lots of advice on how to become a lifeguard in the future. Hoppo said "Never give up, always try hard and learn how to identify rips." He also said "... to practice your board riding skills and to not fear rips."
Over the last week Year 4 have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of digital and hands on Breakout challenges. The challenges involved working as a team to crack a series of mathematical codes to unlock various padlocks allowing them access to a prize inside a briefcase. Students showed a growth mindset, working together in their groups, utilising each others unique skills to be the first ones to crack the codes.
All students were thoroughly involved in the activity and could not wait to share their fun with their families and friends. Year 4 are to be congratulated on the amazing resilience they have shown during these activities. Well done Year 4.
