Last week we highlighted the situation of others in our Diocese who have been devastated by the extreme flood events in the north. There has been a continued request from our Parish and Diocese to support those who have lost so much, in some cases everything. While we know some will be happy to send money to the Flood Appeal (see details below), others are happier giving something more personal and tangible.
Having spoken to some of the wonderful teachers and leaders in these schools who have spent the past two weeks caring for their communities and cleaning up an unbelievable disaster to provide a safe place for their students to come back to, they are not yet ready to receive and allocate a wide variety of donations that we may want to contribute. They have named a wish to support their students who have lost all they own and whose schools have been completely devastated through the simplicity of a care pack with items such as school bags, drink bottles, lunchboxes and some snack items that schools can keep for them on any day they need to be supplied with something. Emailed to you today and included below, is a flyer outlining what would be helpful. Our other parish primary schools will also be assisting in this task, so if you feel you would like to assist, please refer to the flyer for ideas. We would like these specific donations to be given to your child’s classroom teacher so they can then be collected to one space in the school ready to be delivered next weekend. Please could any of these donations be received at school by Wednesday 16th March so they can be organised for delivery.
Please also continue to pray for those who are helping and those in need at this time. Thank you for your generosity of spirit, prayer and support, which is so aligned to the values instilled in our school by the Sisters of St Joseph when they first established this special school. In Mary MacKillop’s words: “Never see a need without doing something about it.”

CELEBRATING OUR FAITH
The Season of Lent - a Season to grow, reflect and find a better way of building the Kingdom of God today … continued.
Lent is the perfect Season to reflect on why and how we interact with others. If we do ‘good’ things without thinking about why we do them, then we have missed an opportunity to treat others with the dignity and respect that mirrors Jesus’ way of interacting with others.
Jesus always gave people time and his full attention.
Doing the ‘right’ thing by our fellow beings is important, but it’s equally important to our growth to always be aware of why and how we see other people.
As we consider the above paragraph, perhaps we can find opportunities to grow as a family through the following practices.
Practice thinking of others by giving up your place. Lent could be a great time to challenge your children to live out Jesus’ words where the ‘first’ will be last and the ‘last’ will be first.
Maybe your children could practice letting someone else be first - to get the treat, to get their dinner, to get through the door….
As we continue to find ways to ‘serve’ others, discuss with your children how every day interactions are a way to serve God. This could be as simple as bringing in the shopping, volunteering to take out the rubbish, or even cleaning a room without making a big deal about it … or even without being asked.

Learning Together
Sleep is your superpower
It has been a very busy start to the school year and I thought it timely to remind us all about the importance of sleep. Children and adults alike, need sleep. Without enough sleep, we get cranky and, with time, unhealthy. But for children, it’s especially important because the effects of sleep deprivation can lead to lifelong problems.
Studies show that children who do not get enough sleep can end up with behavioural and learning problems that persist for years and affect a child’s life forever. The prevalence of devices such as mobile phones and IPads also has implications for sleep. More and more, children are staying up, or being woken up, by these devices. Add to that our achievement culture; between homework and extracurricular activities, many of us simply have less time for sleep.
So, how much sleep does your child need? Here are the recommended amounts:
- Infants: 12 to 16 hours (including naps).
- Toddlers: 11 to 14 hours (including naps).
- Preschoolers: 10 to 13 hours (including naps).
- Grade school-aged children: 9 to 12 hours.
- Teens: 8 to 10 hours.
Here are four ways you can help your child get enough sleep:
- Make sleep a priority.
- Set the bedtime routine earlier.
- Switch all screens off.
- Keep the same routines on the weekend and during the holidays.

Harmony Week is held from 21st March - 28th March. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
On Monday 21st March, we will celebrate Harmony Day at St Joseph’s by wearing a ‘splash’ of orange. We invite students to wear their regular school uniform and choose to wear something orange (such as a ribbon, wristband, orange socks, a badge).
Year 2 Science and Technology
This year, Year 2 has been investigating the living world. Last week they engaged in a Virtual Reality (VR) experience which allowed them to be transported into a range of different environments. During this time they recorded what they could see, hear and feel, as if they were standing on the beach or sitting by the waterfalls. Through the use of VR, students showed a deeper understanding and greater appreciation for the wonder of God’s creation.

Year 3 have been learning about bees in our Science unit for Term 1. We were so grateful to have Mr Meehan join us to talk about bees, hives and the importance of bees to our environment. Year 3 were even able to taste delicious honey from Mr Meehan’s hives.

Year 3 Teachers
Year 6 have been learning about themselves as learners and as individuals. As part of this process, we have been exploring portraiture. So as to make this experience purposeful, we have entered a number of pieces into Australia’s most prestigious portraiture exhibition, The Young Archie which is held annually at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Congratulations to the following students on their pieces and we wish them luck in the judging process.

K - 2 Dance Diaries
Dancing at Home
We're all spending much more time at home these days and it's more important than ever that kids stay active and stimulated. There are so many amazing online dance channels on YouTube providing free dance classes right now:
- Go Noodle
This dance channel is a one-stop shop for all the latest dance crazes. With interactive themed choreography, Go Noodle takes children step-by-step through all the most popular playground dance trends, which even little kids can get to grips with.
- Daniella Ballerina
Welcome to the soothing world of Daniella Ballerina, where classical preschool dance class meets whimsical animation. With music box piano accompaniment, story time, a range of exercises and the calming presence of Australian ballerina Daniella Rowe, your child can participate in a dance class format they may already be familiar with from real-life classes.
- Cosmic Kids
One of the most popular kids' workout channels on YouTube, Cosmic Kids, introduces children to the world of mindfulness and yoga. With colourful story-book backdrops, a bubbly host and a wide range of exercises that allow kids to stretch themselves out to the max, kids not only learn a huge range of yoga moves but also learn important mindfulness lessons.
- Kidz Bop
This chart-topping kids' dance troupe have produced tons of fun dance videos on YouTube that your kids will want to spend all their time watching and learning cool new moves from. With over 1 billion views on their YouTube channel and over 16 million albums sold, Kidz Bop are a huge hit with the kids, and even younger children will enjoy the upbeat tunes, simple moves and charismatic tween dancers.
- Zumba Kids with Dovydas
Offering some of the best kids' Zumba dance classes on YouTube, this channel offers lots of high-octane movement classes, and some are danced just by kids, for kids. Although there are only a few of the kids' videos, your child will likely want the same ones on repeat anyway. Repetition is the name of the game if you want your child to learn a new dance, so make a playlist of the kids' videos and let them workout to their hearts' content.

Winter Sports Trials
All trials that were to be held this week have been postponed. Netball, hockey, and soccer trials will now be held on Friday 18th March. Please be mindful and flexible at present as weather conditions and ground closures may hinder further trials.
Netball NSW Schools Cup
A group of wonderful Year 5 and 6 students competed in the Netball NSW Schools Cup, a competitive all schools tournament, hoping to qualify for the North Coast selection trials. All players showed tremendous enthusiasm and were complemented on the spirit in which they competed on the day. Despite many of our players not having played netball previously, both teams made the finals. Our Green team played for a position in the next stage of the competition and despite a courageous effort, were narrowly defeated. Our inexperienced Blue team gave their all and eventually finished 6th on the day. Thanks to those parents who came to cheer on the teams and for Ms Lisa Gilchrist, Mrs Howard and Mr Lynch for all the organisation.
Cross Country
Our annual school Cross Country Carnival which was scheduled for Wednesday 16th March (Week 7, Term 1) has been postponed due to the weather. The carnival will now be held on the new date of Wednesday 23rd March (Week 8, Term 1) in and around the school grounds. This carnival is for all students in Kindergarten to Year 6.
Shared Lunch: We are pleased that we can also welcome parents and carers to join their children for lunch on the day (weather dependent due to limited covered spaces). Students will be able to sit with their parents/carers out on our playground grass areas or on the undercover areas of the MPA and back of the Library, picnic style (BYO seating). It is important for supervision and safety that students are in these areas. You are invited to bring food to share with your child/ren if this suits you, or they can use their own food packed for the day. The canteen is unable to cater for all who visit, so will only be able to cater for pre-ordered student lunches. We ask parents and carers not to order in flexischools or in person at the canteen for any family members who are not students in our classes.
Parents and carers attending our carnival are to adhere with current COVID-19 Guidelines.
This requires all to continue with the social distancing guidelines of 1.5m, sanitise hands on entry and remain in designated areas around the track within and outside of school grounds, keeping away from the running track and class gathering areas. All visitors entering the school must complete the digital QR sign in and sign out, so will need to factor extra time into arrival.
Please refer to the below timetable for times when students will be competing. Please note these times are an approximate guide only as they are dependent on how fast each race occurs and the smooth change over to the next age group.
