Welcome Back to 2025
What a fantastic start we have had returning to school. With the welcome sign, excited families and happy staff greeting our students, we hope that the beginning was as fun for all of you as it was for us. We really enjoyed welcoming our Kindergarten students and their families on Monday, and can’t wait to see what this new start in ‘big school’ brings in 2025.

What a memorable way to end the week with our 2025 Leaders Badging Ceremony! Congratulations to our SRC and Sports Captains – we’re excited to see the leadership and dedication they will bring to our community.
Mass of Welcome, Joey's Community Picnic and Kindergarten Parent Information Session
On Wednesday 19th February we will be holding our Mass of Welcome at St Agnes' Church at 9:45am and our Welcome Picnic at 4:00pm on the oval behind the MPA (weather pending). We are inviting parents, students and teachers to come together to celebrate the beginning of 2025. This includes face painting, $1.00 ice-creams, games and more. We welcome a number of new families to St Joseph's in 2025 and look forward to them being part of our community.
Come and meet our Parent Community Group (PCG) members, Bertie, our Student Therapy Officer and find out how you can be involved in our community.
Our Kindergarten parents are also invited to an information session with the Kindergarten Teaching Team before the picnic from 3:30pm to 4:00pm in the classrooms.
Our Values at St Joseph’s Primary
With integrity we aspire to be like St Joseph. We demonstrate the values of courage, compassion and humility.
As well as our Patron Saint St Joseph, our school values are underpinned by the legacy of Mary MacKillop through the work of the Josephite sisters. They were formed through consultation with parents, staff, students and our community. We aim to live out these values and embed them in all facets of our lives.
Humility
We are all created equal and in God’s image. We do God’s work quietly and with responsibility.
Courage
We persevere and have heart to do what is right. We show resilience and embrace challenge.
Compassion
We belong to an inclusive community, where we choose kindness and live to serve others.

Uniform Reminders

With the start of a new year, comes the reminder of our school uniform expectations. In our family handbook (on our website under the ‘About Us’ tab, refer to page 20) are the uniform requirements which ensure we have consistency and a sense of pride in our school. While we understand that children like to express their individuality, we expect that they are wearing the correct uniform at all times. In the event that something is lost or extenuating circumstances, we appreciate an explanation to ensure there is a reason we can support you with. There will on occasion be children with medical needs that require an adjustment, and we ask that students and families understand this is not a case of not following the expectations.
There has been some confusion about shoes in conversations as we start school so we reinforce that joggers of colours other than black are only worn on sports and PE days if necessary. On every other day, students are expected to wear black polishable shoes (can be joggers if they meet this requirement) with no other colours, keeping in line with our parish schools uniform.
Hi my name is Bertie, I am the new Groodle Therapy Dog here at St Joseph’s Primary School. My owner is Ms Weaver, a new Year 5 teacher; and she will bring me to school to work ‘on duty’ three days a week.
I am looking forward to helping calm students in 2025 as best I can. I unfortunately can’t interact with everyone I meet because I need to have the energy to be attentive and calm throughout sessions. If you see me walking around the school, please leave me alone. If you see me sitting, you may pat me with one hand only. Only two students can pat me at a time.

Rules for everyone to remember:
You may only pat me when I am sitting or lying down but please ask Ms Weaver first.
- Please always be quiet and calm around me.
- Please don’t feed me human food. You can only feed me the food that Ms Weaver provides.
- I must always be with Ms Weaver on a lead.
- When I need to rest, it will be be in my own space in the back of the Year 5 classrooms.
- Please DON’T squeeze me, or pull my tail or ears.
- Don’t put fingers in my mouth.
- Don’t yell or shout around me.
When I am at school, I will be working with students to help them in a number of ways:
- Calming and Emotional Regulation
- Individual sessions
- Classroom support, depending on student
- Social Skills Groups
- Classroom support, depending on students
- Small group sessions
- Literacy and Numeracy Skills
- Individual or small group session
- Reading, writing or EMU (Extending Mathematical Understanding) style sessions
- In Classroom or breakout spaces
- Behaviour Management
- Positive reinforcement
- Please DO NOT chase me
- Call my name (Bertie). If I come to you please hold my leash, stand quietly.
- If my owner Ms Weaver is around, seeing me - I will come to you, but if she is not around please walk me to Mr Baker or Mrs Kelly.
The beginning of the year has seen the Zones of Regulation Digital Curriculum being rolled out across the school.
What are the Zones of Regulation? I hear you ask.
The Zones of Regulation provides an easy way to think and talk about how we feel on the inside and sorts emotions into four coloured Zones, all of which are expected in life.
The Zones consist of Blue, Green. Yellow and Red Zones.
Throughout the year we will be including information about the Zones in the newsletter - so please look out for it.
Today I have attached a page for you to read through with an activity that you can start to talk to your children about.
What are the Zones of Regulation?

Returning to School Road Safety
Road Safety is a Back to School Essential
As children return to school, it's important to prioritise their safety on the journey to and from school. Take time to discuss these key safety tips with your child:
Getting In and Out of the Car:
- Always use the door closest to the curb to prevent stepping into traffic.
- Make sure your child waits until the car has completely stopped before exiting.
Walking Safely:
- Encourage distraction-free walking by asking your child to remove headphones and put away devices while crossing streets.
- Teach your child to stay alert, follow traffic signals, and use designated pedestrian crossings.
Using the Bus Safely:
- Wait at the bus stop together, standing at least one step back from the edge of the road.
- Always meet your child at the bus stop on the same side of the road—never call them across from the opposite side.
Wait for the bus to leave before crossing the street, ensuring it is safe to cross.
Using Wheeled Transport:
- Remind your child that helmets are mandatory when riding a bike in public—it’s the law.
- Encourage helmet use and protective gear for other wheeled activities, such as scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades.
Never sacrifice safety for convenience, source: https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety
Traffic Management
Please familiarise yourselves with the traffic management procedures for our school site.
Helpful Information for Parents
- ALL Late arrivals MUST be signed in by a parent or carer at the school office. Parents can then be sure that their children have arrived safely to school. Parents/carers not signing late children in at the office will be contacted.
- If your child is away, it is important that you reply to the absence SMS sent on the day of absence - When responding please click on the link in the text message and give a clear and precise explanation for your child's absence.
- For family holidays longer than 10 consective and/or cumulative days during school time, all parents/carers must complete an Extended Leave Notification Form 01 (located on our website under "Our School" tab, in Policies ) and provide a copy of the itinerary.
Medication Information
The Medication Administered - Parent Form link can also be found in Compass under School Documentation / Parent Resources / School Forms should you need to provide another form in the future.
If you have any questions please contact the Office Aunties.

Contact Details
It is important to update your information on the COMPASS APP or with the school office. This includes any new phone numbers, address and emergency contacts if they have changed for your child.
Student Medical Appointments and Early Departure
We strongly encourage parents to organise medical appointments outside of school hours but are conscious that this is not always possible. For your convenience if you have to make a medical appointment for your child during school time please be aware of our breaks for your planning as there will be a delay in getting your child to the office if they are out at lunch play.
Hometime messages
If there is a change to your child's hometime travel arrangements please let your child know before they leave the house or write a note to your child's teacher. Some parents also write a "H" (homelines) or a "B" (buslines) on their child's hand. We understand that plans may change during the day and ask that you phone the office Aunties on 6583 3848 between the hours of 8:30am and 2:30pm. This enables us to ensure that your child gets the message in a timely manner. Please do NOT email the school or message your child's teacher directly as it may not be seen in the timeframe you require.
If an emergency occurs or there is a late change to your child's home time plan we will do everything we can to get the message to your child after 2:30pm. Please be aware that a warning school bell sounds at 3:00pm for classes to prepare to leave the class for hometime at 3:10pm which makes it difficult to guarantee that a message will get to your child.
As we return to school from a holiday period it is not unusual for us to see a few cases of head lice in our community. Head lice are very common so there is no need to be alarmed, however they should be treated quickly to prevent them from spreading.
We are asking that all parents examine their child’s hair and look for:
- persistent scratching, particularly behind the ears and the nape of the neck accompanied by a red rash;
- tiny silver white eggs at the base of the hair shaft;
- small pale brown lice. You may need a magnifying glass and a fine tooth comb under strong light.
If you find head lice please treat immediately and remove ALL eggs as they tend to hatch even when treated. Comb hair through with conditioner to remove eggs more easily. Some cases have become immune to chemical treatments – you may wish to try smothering the hair in conditioner, covering it with a shower cap and leaving it on for ½ hour before removing the eggs with your fingernails. Some parents have had success with this method. Re-treat in this manner every 2 or 3 days. You will also need to wash bed linen, combs, hats and anything else that may harbour head lice.
Please visit this NSW Government Health site for full information on Head Lice and the treatment of them: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/
We thank you for your assistance in helping to reduce the spread of head lice throughout the school community.
Photography Guidelines for Parents and Carers
We recognise that parents and carers enjoy photographing and recording the progress of their child at school and on school activities. We recognise that many of you like to share these personal memories online and on social media. We ask for your cooperation and care concerning the use and distribution of photographs of other children at our school. Some families have very real legal and safety issues which could put a child at risk if an image is made public online. More generally, it is respectful of the privacy of other members of the school community to ask permission before posting an image online. Even if your social media settings are private, it is easy for images to become public, particularly if they are tagged or shared by others. Please see the school website under “Policies and Forms” for the Photography Guidelines for parents and carers, mandatory policies and further resources.
When we run activities and hold events here at school that families are invited to we often take photos to share with our community through the school newsletter and our social media platforms. Please note that for adults attending public events there is assumed permission for their image to be able to be published on our platforms.
