Thank you to Fr Peter for celebrating the 2019 school year with us on Wednesday. Thank you also to Mrs Thurgate, our Faith Choir, staff and students who participated in and led roles in our Mass, and family members who joined us for this special celebration. What a beautiful way to join together in thanksgiving for a great year.
Thank you to Ms Laura Hatherly for her amazing organisation for our Swimming Carnival, and to Mrs Sarah Blundell and Mrs Jeannine Ucdereli for stepping in and completing the preparation and setup and leading us on the day due to Ms Hatherly needing to recover from sickness. To all of the parents, staff and students for their participation and support on the day, thank you very much.
Our results will be printed in next week’s newsletter.
NEW STAFF FOR 2020:
Nathan Porter - AP Mission
Kathy Bailey - Teacher
Melissa Buckland - Teacher
Kim Goldie - Canteen Coordinator
We will feature Nathan, Kathy and Melissa in next week’s newsletter.
I am very excited to be the new Canteen Co-ordinator at St Joseph’s. I am a busy mum to four boys, all in St Agnes’ Parish schools, so I am very familiar with the values of our Parish and schools. I love spending time hanging out with my family and really enjoy baking from scratch and providing healthy meals for my family. I look forward to providing healthy food for your children too. It is great to see that you already have the Healthy Schools strategy in place. I look forward to working with the whole school community to ensure we keep serving good quality food to the children and staff. I welcome your feedback and am open to suggestions for anything you might like to see going forward in 2020. Next week I will send out a survey and a sign up form for new volunteers. Parents, carers and grandparents are most welcome to come and help and I look forward to working with you all. I will be in the canteen during the MAI interviews in January 2020, so please stop by and say hello, I look forward to meeting you and your children soon.

TEACHING TEAMS 2020
Today children moved into their new class for 2020 during the middle session as a transition, with most students able to meet their new teacher. Next week teachers will spend some time sharing information about their current students with the new teachers to assist in the transition process.
As a result of surveying our community, there was a decision to use teacher initials to name each class for 2020. We will still be working in teams to support students. Below are the main teachers who are working with each class, with teams formed where there are teachers working part time.

THANK YOU AND SEE YOU LATER (NOT GOODBYE)
We will thank and farewell staff who will be leaving us for 2020 on Monday 16th December at a special assembly. Every member of our staff have been part of our Joey’s family and have made individual and collaborative contributions to our school. We wish them well on their next adventures (some just for now).
- Mrs Ann Thurgate - Ann joined us as Assistant Principal Mission in 2019, in a temporary role. Ann enriched our faith life and community through 2019 and we will miss her. She will return to her previous role with the Catholic Schools Office in 2020.
- Mrs Shannon Kelly - Shannon has been part of our school for 10 years. She is following a passion for sustainability and outdoor learning by taking on a temporary position with The Nature School in Port Macquarie for 2020. We know she will love this role and we will learn from her new experiences.
- Mrs Jemma Wilkins - Jemma joined us this year in a part-time capacity on Year 1. We have enjoyed getting to know Jemma and wish her well as she moves to a permanent position at The Nature School in Port Macquarie in 2020.
- Mrs Rhianna Hancock - Rhianna has worked at St Joseph’s for several years. She has enjoyed working with students and families at Joey’s and we wish her well as she moves to a position at St Joseph’s Wauchope in 2020.
- Mrs Anna Hill - Anna has worked at St Joseph’s for 6 years. Her bright and cheery personality, love of learning and care for her students will be missed. She is taking a position at St Aloysius in Chisholm for 2020.
- Mrs Nicola Jackson - Nicola will be taking a break from teaching in 2020 to excitedly welcome a new baby to the family and spend time with her daughter Lorelai. We look forward to hearing the happy news in Term 1 2020 and meeting the new baby.
- Mr Brent Nichols - Brent took on part time roles with us during the year and will continue to work with us in casual roles during 2020. We thank him for his time spent with us.
- Tarran Marr-Harris - Tarran shared the Indigenous Education Worker role with Caleb Smith this year. Tarran is starting his University study in 2020, so will be focussing on his new learning. He has promised to visit and share his love of Indigenous language and culture when he can.
- Mrs Annemaree Tonkin - Annemaree has been our Canteen Coordinator for more years than she would tell me, long enough to be truly part of the life of the school. Annemaree has decided it’s time to hang up the tools and enjoy a much earned retirement. We appreciate the years of service and care she has given to Joey’s. We wish her a happy and enjoyable retirement.
Student Reports were sent home today with your child. This is a time to celebrate the learning and growth that has taken place for your child this semester. In particular, the effort column shows how your child has worked to give their best. If you would like to discuss your child’s report, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher.
MATHS ASSESSMENT INTERVIEW (MAI) BOOKING
All students in Years 1-6 2020 are required to complete a MAI prior to commencing classes for 2020. On Tuesday a note was emailed to the parents and guardians of children in Kindergarten - Year 5 with instructions for how to book your child into a MAI interview during Wednesday 29th January or Thursday 30th January. Bookings for our limited child minding on these days need to be made using the second booking code. Bookings for both events will close Wednesday 18th December.
itive outlook to enrich our team. We look forward to continuing working with Alison.
MAI - Maths Assessment Interview - What is it?
The Maths Assessment Interview (MAI) is an assessment which is undertaken by each individual student prior to the commencement of Term 1 and focuses on four main areas of Mathematics - Counting, Place Value, Addition/Subtraction and Multiplication/Division. It is designed to provide the teacher with valuable data which is then used to guide our teaching. This information is entered into a database which allows us to track the progress of each student and target learning experiences at their point of need.
Our aim is to provide engaging learning experiences which help students develop a conceptual understanding of numbers ie. understanding that each ‘number’ consists of a numeral/symbol (eg.7), a name (eg. seven) and a quantity (eg. ///////). Many children learn to count rote (just like learning the words to a song). The problem with this is that they may not develop an understanding of the number concepts. They will often not be able to give the number before or after, or understand the concepts of ‘more/less than’, and will experience difficulty grasping addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills without this foundational knowledge.
Please remember to book your MAI Interview for your child using the follwoing link www.schoolinterviews.com.au then follow the simple instructions below. Please note when you make your online booking you will be asked to ‘Select your child’s 2020 Year Grade’ (ie. Year 1 if your child is currently in Kindergarten). You will then have the option to select a day and time for your appointment with any available teacher listed.
