STAFF ACTION TEAMS
At St Joseph’s, we work each year through our School Improvement Plan to focus on goals that will assist our school to move forward. These goals are designed from various information that is available to our school, including DOLSIS surveys that some families have just completed for us. There are other forms of information gathering too that we will ask you to assist us with at various times. We can then fine tune our goals and give these to our Staff Action Teams to work through the “action” to get there.
The three areas from our School Improvement Plan that we are working on throughout the year are: Mission, Teaching and Learning and Parent Partnership. You will have noticed we are seeking your feedback and ideas currently for the Parent Partnership and Engagement goal. This is really important to us, as this is how we can connect with and support families to improve our school. I really encourage and appreciate your involvement in this quick information seeking exercise, so that we can work on the best ways to communicate and connect with you. We can’t promise that all of the ideas can happen, but we will make every attempt to incorporate what is possible into our plans. Click on the image here for our very short, three question survey, emailed to you earlier this week.
SOCIAL DISTANCING
We remind parents and carers of the need to social distance around the school during drop off, pick up and office attendance. You may have noticed the signs at the entrance to our office, where only 2 adults at a time can attend the foyer of the office, due to the ratio of space to adults. Thank you so much for supporting our Office Staff and other parents and carers by following this practice. We also ask parents to maintain the 1.5m space when dropping off and picking up.

Principal
We are really proud of 2T for how wonderfully they hosted our Prayer Assembly this week. Special thanks to Luke Davies (5H), for putting this video together for us to share with you.
YEAR 4 ACCENDERE
Our Year 4 participated in ‘Accendere’, a day of faith development and learning how to be a good friend. We had some special guests help facilitate the day; the Youth Ministry Officers from our local St Agnes' Parish. The day was filled with fun, games, activities and of course, friendship!

SETTING HIGH EXPECTATIONS
Children learn best when they are expected to succeed.
Research tells us that high expectations are linked to higher achievement, performance, behaviour, attitude and self worth. We know that all children need to be challenged and engaged and all children have the potential to learn, grow and develop. The expectations we hold of our children are critical in determining their academic and social outcomes.
It is important to keep our expectations realistic by not aiming too high or too low. The key is in setting realistic goals, knowing your child and avoiding making comparisons. There’s a difference between what they are expected to know or do, and what they actually know or can do.
Things we can do to support high expectations -
- Adopt a growth mindset - Support a Growth mindset in your children by emphasising the importance of hard work. It involves focussing on the value of the process that goes into things … rather than the outcome.
- Make expectations clear, realistic and reasonable - Set achievable expectations for your kids and make sure they know exactly what they are, and how you expect them to achieve them.
- Aim for personal bests and fulfilled potential - Not every child can get into the top sporting team, but they can still play sport, improve and even excel in it. It is reasonable and beneficial to expect fulfilled potential.
- Let them make mistakes - By helping them too much, you can send the message that your expectations are low, and that they can’t meet those set by others (Teachers, sporting coaches etc). Even if they struggle, ‘failure’, in its many forms, is an inevitable part of life. By understanding that from a young age, children grow to be motivated by their mistakes, to discover where they went wrong, and to strive to fix them in the future – on their own.
- Offer support and encouragement through the process - Let your children know that you have faith in their ability … that you believe they are confident and capable … as well as letting them know that hard work is what’s needed to get good results. Offer them whatever emotional and practical support you can, and that they may need, in order to achieve their goals.
One of the best ways you can support your child, boost their confidence, and increase their motivation, is to have high expectations.
‘It’s really important to have high expectations of children, adults, anyone, because if you have no expectations then people don’t strive for things’ (Melbourne Child Psychology & School Psychology Services)

PBS (Positive Behaviour Support)
Our focus for the last two weeks was ‘I am Respectful’. We congratulate our students who demonstrate respectful behaviours both on the playground and in the classroom, towards each other and towards adults.
Our behaviour focus for Week 5 and 6 is ‘I am Resilient’. Children are learning ways that we can bounce back when things go wrong. The best way to learn this is through practise, accepting when things go wrong and applying strategies to build ourselves up again. If life was perfect, we would never be able to develop our resilience!!
800M AND 1500M ATHLETICS
To complete our Athletics selections, we held the 800m and 1500m events today. We would like to congratulate all students who participated and earned points for their House. The team spirit was wonderful to see!
All results of our winning House and our Athletics Age Champions for 2020 will be awarded next week at a special presentation.
INTERSCHOOL NETBALL AND SOCCER COMPETITION
We held Netball and Soccer trials for our Year 5 and 6 students this week. We will take a team of each to play in an Interschool competition between the other Catholic schools. It will be held on Friday 11th September at St Peter's Primary School.
HASTINGS SCHOOLS FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
An expression of interest was emailed this week to the parents and carers of our Year 5 and 6 students to trial for U11’s Boys, U12’s Boys and U12's Girls Futsal teams to represent St Joseph’s Primary at the Hastings School Championships. It is to be held on 4th September at the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium.
Please complete this online permission form by the end of today (Friday 14th August) if your child would like to trial for a team: https://forms.gle/ynG6iz4JxFHJwf2TA

Next week in Peer Support, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks and the role that friends play in each other's lives. Children will construct a visual representation of this during the session.
Encourage your child to identify friends they have who can provide support to them if the need arises.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of Science and Technology and runs from 15th to 23rd August.
It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of scientists, use of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, (STEM) professionals, innovators, designers and entrepreneurs in the world of science.
The aim of this year's theme ‘Deep Blue’ is to encourage young people to become fascinated by our planet's oceans, which cover two-thirds of its surface and help control its weather systems and the make-up of the atmosphere.
This year our students will be celebrating National Science Week with a trip to our very own St Joseph’s Maker Space where they will be participating in a unique experience connected to this year's theme.

PRIMARY DANCE
On Tuesdays at Lunch 2, you can hear much fun, laughter and the sounds of our favourite tunes blasting in the hall, as our Primary Dance group practice their dance skills with Mrs Goldstein.
They have been doing some ‘golden oldies’, making up their own choreography as well as just dancing for the fun of it!
Dance club is an amazing opportunity to communicate and socialise with others. You can dance in freestyle and music. You can also work in groups and in pairs with others. Dance club is led by Mrs Goldstein and is on Tuesdays. (by Sydney Forsyth - 5G)

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY (PUPIL FREE) - 2nd SEPTEMBER 2020
A Staff Development Day (Pupil Free) has been planned for Wednesday 2nd September in Week 7 this term.
This is not at the beginning or end of a term as it would most often be, due to the need for the day to fall in line with professional learning that school staff have been engaging in with Catholic Schools Office, Lismore staff during staff meetings this term.
In recognising the need to support parents who work on this day, there will be child-minding provided for those who are unable to organise care outside of school. To ensure we are able to cater for this planning, any parents requiring care for their child/children on this day are asked to please contact the Office Aunties or email us at sjpport@lism.catholic.edu.au to book. We will need to have bookings finalised on Friday 28th August, so the cut off time will be 3:00pm on this day.
Our remaining planned Staff Development Day (pupil free) is:
- Monday 12th October (Term 4, Week 1)
Due to circumstances around COVID-19, this date may change.
